At the ECER launch in Kuala Terengganu on Oct 29, an MoU for a nucleus goat breeding research centre will be signed between the Department of Veterinary Services, Marditech Corporation Sdn Bhd and Terengganu Agrotech Development Corporation Sdn. Bhd.

To be located on a 900ha site, the centre will do research and development in goat breeding and husbandry and aims to boost income from the sector and reduce the country's import of mutton.

The farms will also double up as a resource centre and provide hands-on training for managers, professionals and researchers.

Abstract
The objective of this paper is to contribute to progress in the choices of strategies for further development of goat farming in the 21st century. During the last 20 years, the number of goats around the world increased (by about 60%) not only in the countries with low income (75%) but also in those with high (20%) or intermediate (25%) income. This situation is due to the capacity for adaptation by goats to very different environments, to the development of goat farming in developing countries where subsistence farming, barter economy and community culture are important, and where the market economy is relatively limited, and to the ecological image of goat farming and products in developed countries. Goat farming is in a good position to pursue its development in the 21st century, if a satisfactory policy is applied tactfully. For that, the factors explaining goat farming success during the end of the 20th century must be maintained and developed as the social aspects of goat farming in developing and developed countries, particularly in land management and the sociological integration into an economically sustainable life. Moreover we have to improve or maintain the good image of goat products. The two main improvements to bring into goat farming in the 21st century concern research organisations, which must encounter the needs of goat farmers and be well adapted to different production systems in order to lower the research deficit in the goat sector, and investments for better supplies particularly to the poor goat farmers.

BOER goats will soon dot the fields of animal husbandry farms all over the country with the success of a high-technology Boer goat breeding project by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi).

Mardi has employed the Advanced Reproductive Biotechnology (ARB), hich together with the National Animal Embryo Centre (NAEC), aims to stock the farms of breeders in the country with high quality breeds of the Boer goat. The goat produces mutton of the best quality with low fat content.
The ARB project involves the production of embryos from quality cows and goats especially imported from mutton-producing areas like South Africa and Australia that are bred at satellite and
breeding farms nationwide to create a livestock nucleus or elite group.

The government had also set up a National Boer Goat Farm in Pondok Tanjung, Perak, and a National Feedlot Centre in Negri Sembilan under this project. Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who visited the Kluang Mardi station recently, said the NAEC and ARB based at the station had been given due accreditation by the Boer Goat Breeders Association of South Africa. Two representatives from South Africa were present to deliver certificates to NAEC and ARB for the purpose.

"We're now encouraging more livestock farmers to breed the elite stock of Boer goats being produced here in helping the country achieve self-sufficiency in mutton supply. "Currently, only about nine-per cent of mutton is from locally bred goats but with this new project, we're confident of tremendously boosting our production." Muhyiddin said the government would ensure that livestock farmers interested in taking up Boer goat breeding get the necessary support from Bank Pertanian, Fund for Food, SME Bank and others, adding that this new bio-technology would also be used for breeding other livestock.

The Boer goat project was among the latest advances in biotechnology on display at the three-day Showcase Bio-Business Mardi 2008 at the Kluang Mardi station opened by Muhyiddin. Muhyiddin said the event would help promote Kluang as a national focus area for livestock development.

Nutritional Information About Fat Content Of Goat Meat
Goat meat is 50-65 percent lower in fat than similarly prepared beef, but has a similar protein content. (USDA).
It contains up to 45 per cent less saturated fat than chicken, even with the skin removed. (USDA).
Goat meat has 40 percent less saturated fat than chicken (without skin) and 850 percent less than beef. (USDA).

How To Save Calories
A useful guide to cutting calories is to avoid calorie-dense foods that are high in fat or sugar. These foods are too easily eaten. After a large main course we are not usually hungry, yet it's easy to eat a large serving of high-calorie ice cream, or a creamy dessert. By comparison, it's much more difficult to eat 4-5 large apples. Also, dietary fat has more than twice the calories (9 per gram) than carbs or protein (4 per gram), while excessive sugar can raise blood-glucose levels too rapidly and leave you hungry within a couple of hours. A better way to cut calories (and still feel full) is to choose high-fiber foods, such as vegetables, fruits, beans and whole grains. These foods tend to have a lower caloric content, and take longer to digest thus giving us a feeling of fullness for longer.

There are plans for a RM10 million (USD3mn) goat technology and research centre in Serating, Marang, under the East Coast Economic Region's (ECER) livestock farming initiatives.

The research centre, Taman Teknologi Kaprima Bestari, will be located over 10ha within a Permanent Food Production Park, the ECER secretariat said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. The move is aimed at Malaysia achieving self-sufficiency in mutton as the country needs 10 million goats a year.Currently, Malaysia imports mutton mainly from Australia.

An order of lamb chops from a posh restaurant will bring you a nicely-done meat of sheep from the kitchen. Tender and succulent with the right proportion of meat and fat – undisputed characteristics of premium grade lamb chops. Alas they are flown from New Zealand or Australia, either chilled or frozen.

You may ask: “Why can’t we be served with Made in Malaysia lamb chops?” Your inquisitiveness may soon be rewarded when our goat industry starts to produce “chevon chops” from young Malaysian bred goats. Yes, chevon chops from goats as lamb chops from sheep.

Lately we have been seeing more local investment in goat farming. More goats are being reared today than in 2003. There are about 20,000 farmers currently involved in goat farming.

“By 2020 the country is envisaged to have 3.2 million goats reared for breeding,” says Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin, Director-General of the Department of Veterinary Services, Malaysia. “These goats will be the production units to supply 68% of the national requirement for goat meat in 10 years’ time.”

In tandem with this development, the Government has encouraged the setting up of more specialised stock farms to generate high quality goats for breeding. Goats from these farms will supply the improver seed stock to uplift the productivity of goats in the industry.

The joint effort of Mardi and the Department of Veterinary Services has realised the setting up of several Boer goat multiplication farms. Added to that, the East Coast Economic Corridor Development Council has also supported the establishment of such a farm in Terengganu. As is crucial in the other industries, goat marketing has yet to be developed. Currently the many players in the industry have their own strategies to cater to the different market segments – breeding farms, slaughter markets, organic fertiliser processors.

A private sector driven marketing system encompassing all players in the value chain may solve some of the hiccups in the trading and production of meat goats in this country. Why meat from Boer goats and not from our own indigenous Kajang goats? As far as meat yield is concerned, no other breed has yet to surpass the productivity of Boer goats.

At a similar age of slaughter (12 months), Boer goats produce 30% more meat than Kajang. On two hectares of land, Boer goats yield 210% more kilograms of live weight than Kajang goats. Loin portion – from where chevon chops are cut – of Boer goats is 40% heavier than Kajang. Besides, there are many other plus factors when raising Boer goats – ability to breed all year round, and general adaptability to many habitats.

This is not to deny the many virtues of Kajang goats. They are hardy and thrive on poor feeding environment, among others. We need to concurrently improve the Kajang goats by getting them to produce more meat per kilogramme of feed. We could do so by upgrading the local Kajang goats with the Boer. A similar path could also be opted for Jamnapari goats.

Many more things need to be done to get the level of local production to reach the critical mass beyond the breeding phase. Good nutrition is crucial to ensure the productivity potential of Boer goats is not hindered.

Goat rearers require the right skill and knowledge in the husbandry of goats. Use of modern reproductive biotechnologies involving the manipulation and utilisation of semen, embryos and other ovarian products, needs to be explored and commercially applied.

Kajang and other Asiatic goat breeds should be exploited to add to the much needed population of breeder goats, surrogate mothers and replacements. The feeding of goats in the breeding farms and feedlots has to be intensified with more efficient use of locally available feedstuffs, including by-products from rice and oil palm.

Opportunities abound to cater to the demand of the global Halal market of which goat meat could form a substantial portion in the coming years.

Professor Mohamed Ali Rajion of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Universiti Putra Malaysia has even attempted to produce health-enhancing chevon containing increased concentration of unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids.

Much has been said about reinventing agriculture as a third engine of economic growth for Malaysia. Goat farming, when done systematically, can enable the smallholders in the villages to sustain a reasonable income. Going big commercially in the production of goat meat and breeding stock has its role in the national agenda to increase agricultural productivity of the country.

Perhaps this time around we could collectively realise the popular aspiration of meeting our own food needs and being less dependable on outside supplies. And chevon from local goats is surely a nutritious item on the family menu.

The success of the decision will depend on the cooperation from the private sector and the government sector.

Good relationship between private sector and government departments is important in further growth of agricultural sector to make Malaysia a modern agro-based industrial country in the K-economic era.

Main Strategy for the Action Trade Balance Plan
Growth in the production of goat meat is expected to increase by 6.7% per year during the five years of 2006-2010 and will keep increasing as much as 2,020 metric tones in year 2010. The government is looking for ways to give better profit to the commercial and semi-commercial farmers to encourage such ventures. Three main strategies have been identified in the Balance of Trade Action Plan:
• Improve the quality and encourage the usage of local agro-based products
• Analyzing the need for imported agricultural goods and replace it with local agricultural products
• Increase the competitiveness of our products in international market

The Strategy and Planning By GENERASI MAJUJAYA Sdn Bhd

ECER - Set To Be An Agropolitan Hub Focusing On Developing Crop, Fish And Livestock Clusters

The East Coast Economic Region is set to be an agropolitan hub focusing on developing crop, fish and livestock clusters

Agriculture will be the main thrust of the East Coast Economic Region (ECER), generating revenue of RM8.57 billion in the three east coast states by 2020, Petronas president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Hassan Merican.

Two years ago, revenue from agriculture was about RM3.7 billion.

To help Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu achieve this, the ECER - the latest of the country's three economic corridors introduced in the past few months - is creating an "agropolitan", literally an A-Z of an agricultural hub.

Hassan said Kelantan had been identified for the cultivation of poultry and herbs, Terengganu for goat rearing and citrus valley and Pahang, for cattle farming and pineapples.

'Our experts have identified two types of crops - citrus fruits and pineapples - as the most suitable to be cultivated in the region," he said in a statement.

In 2005, agriculture accounted for about 16 percent of the region's gross domestic product and provided 22.9 percent of the regional labour force. ECER, which also covers Mersing in Johor, makes up 51 percent of the total land areas in Peninsular Malaysia.

Agropolitan is an all-encompassing approach from providing quality seeds to good agriculture practices and business mentoring, and it will help many get a leg up. As a whole, the creation of agropolitan hubs will enhance industry practices, increase yield and supplement income stream.

This is being done by expanding large-scale commercial farming, the use of modern technology, developing value-added activities and improving supply chain management, Hassan said.

Central of the approach is the establishment of Collection, Processing and Packaging Centres (CPPCs) and Collection and Marketing Centres (CMCs). They are the nerve centre for sorting, grading and tagging of fruits and vegetables, packaging, processing, palletising, cold chain services, retails and export management and distribution.

The CPPC and CMC will also serve as a one-stop centre for services certification and accreditation. They will be connected to supermarkets and exporters for efficiency, production planning, inventory control as well as trading and negotiations.

A total of 18 CPPCs and CMCs will be built, including eight specifically to cater for fruits and vegetables. The remaining 10 will focus on kenaf (two), herbal (three), fish (two) and livestock (three).

Petronas has also proposed a number of agriculture parks. They include permanent, separate parks for agriculture food, poultry production, beef/mutton production and Aquaculture Industry Zone (AIZ).

In Pahang, some 7,400ha in Pekan and Rompin has been earmarked for pineapple parks as well 5,000ha in Ulu Tembeling and 3,500ha in Lanchang for permanent fruit parks. Terengganu gets 1,000ha in Lojing for floriculture and vegetable plantation and another 1,414ha in Dungun for a citrus fruits valley. There will be two AIZs in Terengganu (Kenyir) and Kelantan (Pergau).

Part of the agropolitan approach is to focus on developing crop, fish and livestock clusters. The strategies also require participation of private sector and government agencies like Felda as anchor companies, and the strengthening of marketing and global networking.

Strategic initiatives to develop the crop clusters will include establishing nucleus-contract farming models involving farmers and anchor companies, as well as agriculture parks including permanent food production parks, and group farming projects.

Kuala Berang in Terengganu has been picked as a production base of breeder animal stocks for goats, while Muadzam Shah in Pahang, for cattle to be distributed to commercial farmers for breeding and fattening.

SMEs (small and medium enterprises), meanwhile, will be roped in for poultry farming in at least four poultry parks in Gua Musang (Kelantan), Chendering (Terengganu), Gebeng and Gambang in Pahang.

Strategies for the fisheries clusters will include production of fish for commercial fish farming, development of downstream activities relating to fish processing and value-added products and improving output and economic standing of micro-SMEs currently involved in fish processing.

Overall, the focus on agropolitan will create jobs for more than 42,000 local populace throughout the value chain, besides entrepreneur opportunities for local companies and SMEs, Hassan said

Currently, Malaysia mainly imports mutton from Australia.

The technology goat park, which will be built and managed by the Department of Veterinary Service Terengganu (JPHT), will collate all relevant information and research on goat breeding, as well as modernize the countrys goat breeding industry, with the ECER as a prominent hub, it said.

"This technology park is projected to be a research and information centre for goat breeders, especially those from Asian countries," JPHTs Director Dr Azizol Mohd Sharun was quoted as saying in the statement.

"We will bring in the latest goat breeding technology and techniques from abroad. This new technology will help breeders to minimize the production cost and give better returns."

Meanwhile, breeders and parties interested in the industry can avail themselves to goat farming courses, he said.

"We envisage the goat park to offer better economic prospects and employment opportunities for local entrepreneurs and graduates in related fields of study."

The goat technology park will be equipped with a farmhouse, mini slaughterhouse, fertilizer processing factory, restaurant, product exhibition hall, a mosque, and staff dormitories.

Aside from goat breeding and research activities, the park also offers an attractive and children-friendly tourist attraction where feeding and patting animals may be highlights.

Terengganu is targeting over 3.5 million visitors this year. Many of its tourism attractions are aimed at nature lovers and the goat park is expected to draw in its fair share of tourists.

The nations per capita consumption of mutton has risen from 0.67kg in 2006 to 0.74kg in 2007.

Malaysia has traditionally been Australias biggest live export market, importing about 15,000 tonnes of mutton and 50,000 goats.

Under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP), the ECER is targeted to increase the goat breeding activities by seven percent within five years to tap into increasing local and international demand.

It will focus on high meat yielding goats to replace the smaller local animals.

To achieve its goal of 35 percent self-sufficiency in goat production by year 2015, it will need another 18,000 breeding goats.

The target is for ECER to hit 2,020 metric tonnes in year 2020, it said.

Malaysias goat farming is made up of 75 percent traditional breeders, while 15 per cent is semi-commercial with 10 percent in commercial farming.

Within the ECER, projects to boost goat breeding includes setting up a nucleus goat breeding research centre in Tersat, the establishment of the Collection, Processing and Packaging Centre (CPPC) and Collection and Marketing Centre (CMC) for traditional farmers to assemble and market goats.

Terengganu Heading For Goat-Hub Status In ECER

KUALA TERENGGANU: A RM2mil goat-breeding facility will be established in the Serating Permanent Food Production Park in Marang to make the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) one of the country’s largest mutton producers.

Operated by Cosmopal Sdn Bhd, the facility is part of the ECER plan to establish Terengganu as a goat and mutton hub.

The 30ha farm currently has 1,400 Jamnapari goats, and each of its three enclosures can house 440 goats.

While infrastructure is being improved, Cosmopal’s target is to raise its breeding livestock to 4,000 goats, in response to increasing demand for good livestock.

Since its incorporation in 2000, Cosmopal has supplied more than 10,000 Jamnapari goats to farmers across Malaysia. Each goat costs between RM750 to RM850.

In Malaysia, goat farming industry is
accorded high priority in the Third National
Agriculture Plan (NAP3), especially in
meeting the country’s demand for goat
meat. To date, the Malaysian government
has emphasized on agricultural
development following the 1997 economic
downturn in which food import exceeded
RM 12 billion per year. In addition, 15,000
ton metric goat meat, which forms 95% of
the country demand, is imported every year to meet
the local demand of 700,000 goats per year. However,
the population of the goats in Malaysia stands at only
200,000 and this figure is expected to decrease every
year.
The selling price of goat meat is RM15-20 per kg and
the consumption per capita is 0.5 kg. In Malaysia, goat
meat is edible to all races and faith. Goat meat is also
low in fat (3%) compared to other meats such as cattle
and sheep (16%). Based on Malaysia’s supply and
demand, social and cultural background, hence,
commercialization of goat farming promises exciting
opportunities and returns.
Currently, the development of goat farming in Malaysia
is restricted by the insufficient number of suitable
breeds of commercial purposes. At present, live goats
are imported and bred in Malaysia.
However, this poses a variety of problems such as the
high cost of imported breeds, inconsistent stock
quality and inability to adapt to tropical climate. As a
result, the goats have low resistance to diseases and
thus, higher mortality rate.
To ensure success in the commercialization plan, a few
criteria have to be fulfilled . The criteria includes
selection of goats breed that is adaptable to tropical
climate and yields higher growth rate per unit
exchange of feed, nutritional requirement, i.e., optimal
balance between concentrate and grass, and diseasefree
status, which involves good farm management
and practices.

Status of Goat Production in Asia
Currently, there is a surge in the demand for goats, paving the way for what some countries now call as the "goat revolution". Goat raising has become not just for the Asian rural farm households. It has emerged as a popular business option for many affluent entrepreneurs in some Asian countries. Seeing great economic potentials, many have gone into goat raising as a business, with some importing exotic stocks and venturing into breeding on a commercial scale. Therefore, the goat industry has continuously been growing as local demand for goat meat and milk increases.

In addition to daily consumption, goat meat has been recognized traditionally as a healthy or functional food, or for health-giving purposes other than for dietary purposes. For instance, in Korea, goats are generally regarded as a healthy food source that helps the human body to get used to seasonal climatic changes.

The production systems practiced by smallholders depend on many factors such as investment, herd size, availability of grazing areas, and availability of feed supplies that can be categorized into extensive, semi-intensive, intensive, and integration with tree crops.

Extensive or free-range and semi-intensive systems are the most common practice among smallholders in Asia. The livestock-tree crop integrated system, where the animals are reared under tree crops such as rubber, oil palm and fruit trees, is also commonly practiced. However, as the goat industry continues to grow, the production system has gradually improved toward a more commercial oriented management system. Hence, it is important to provide small-scale farmers with scientific and technological information, as well as support services such as credit and infrastructure assistance, to enable them to thrive and compete in this growing industry.

Issues and Constraints in Goat Production

The major constrains in goat production system in most Asian countries are recognized as follows:

1) Rearing system: unavailability of suitable breeding goats; lack of suitable land and feed resources; inadequacy of knowledge of goat husbandry among farmers; lack of effective disease prevention and control program; and lack of good production practice program for farmers.
2) Management systems: inadequate planning and system to utilize goat by-products; inadequacy in technical knowledge; and insufficient farm labor.
3) Marketing: inadequate promotion of goat product consumption; lack of continuous marketing promotion for live goat and its products; higher prices of goat meat and milk compared with other sources; inadequate market for goat products.
4) Food culture: goat meat is not commonly a part of the meal of most Asians except those of Malay, Arab and Chinese descents; and people have aversion over the strong smell in goat meat and milk.

Prospects and Recommendations

Through the years, research and development have resulted in advanced technologies and efficient cultural practices in improving goat production. Specific studies on the crossing of local goats with introduced breeds, nutrition and feed resource availability and quality, animal health management, and product processing have led to improved goat production, especially when introduced for adoption to local farmers through village demonstrations on sustainable livestock farming systems. The potential to develop and further expand goat production systems has been recognized, such that collaborative research programs among livestock experts in the Asian region must be pursued toward stimulating further the development of goat production.

In view of the growing demand for goat meat and milk, each country must formulate a long-term development plan considering the following factors: a) fostering goat production especially where sources of raw feed materials are abundant; b) provision of credit assistance to encourage private investment; c) development of an integrated goat production center; d) selection and improvement of the best available genetic resources of goats; and e) human resources development throughout the milk and meat value chain (production, processing and marketing).

Improved goat production can also be realized through the application and adoption of breeding technologies, better utilization of local feed resources, and establishment of milk collection and processing systems in a sustainable integrated livestock farming system. Meanwhile, the challenge for increasing goat meat production is a huge and exciting task. The main objective is to increase the goat population in terms of both quantity and quality. The establishment of several nucleus farms will pave the way for the development of the goat industry.

Assisted reproductive technologies must also be addressed as vital tools in enhancing goat breeding improvement programs. However, the effectiveness of these reproductive techniques and the expected benefits to the goat farmers will largely depend on the accuracy of identifying the best bucks and does through a well planned breeding objective, selection and mating program.

Boden Farm Creates Its Own Lineage Of Boer Goats

BAHAU, April 1 (Bernama) -- In view of the great potential for goat farming in the country, a goat breeder is venturing into nurturing its own lineage of top quality goats based on the world famous Boer species of goats.

Distinct Agricultural Services Sdn Bhd, which runs the BoDen goat farm at Serting Hilir near here, aims to market the offspring of this lineage to local breeders and thus help improve the quality of local produce derived from goats.

Its chief executive, Zainal Abdul Ghani, told Bernama:
"I chose the Boer breed because its features are better than those of other breeds as it has more meat than bones, its meat has no smell and is softer, and its cholesterol level is lower.

"This species is also known for its parenting prowess, as it takes good care of its young."

So, you want to raise boer goats?

Raising goats in the Philippines is a profitable venture. Artemus Lot C. Almeda knows this. This is particularly if the breed you are raising is Boer goats. “Our farm is known in the goat industry as one of the best sources of Boer goats in the country,” says Art, as he is known among his friends.

His father advised him to use a full-blood Boer goats and Anglo bucks as starters. “We select the Boer goat because it is known for its meat,” he says. “Anglo goat is added to improve the milking and size of the native does.”

So in the middle of 2005, Art imported his first batch of 30 heads of full-blood Boer does and two award-winning full-blood Boer bucks from South Australia. Because of the change of weather from winter in Australia to hot and humid here in the Philippines, the goats suffered heat stroke and resulted in mortalities.
The second batch came one year after, when Art imported 65 full-blood Boer does and four full-blood Boer bucks sired by award-winning Boer goats from the leading breeder in Southern Australia. Upon arrival from Australia, the goats had thick winter hair coats. Their daily intake of roughage, grains and water were strictly monitored until their hair became smooth and shiny, which signaled they have acclimatized to the tropical condition in the Philippines. There was zero mortality from this batch of imports.

After three years of raising goats, Art has some advices to share. “Make sure to invest on a good quality full-blood Boer or Anglo buck because the buck represents 50% of type of goats you will be producing,” he says.

This is how they are upgrading their breeding stocks. The offsprings from the Anglo-native cross are bred with the Boer buck to produce meat-type goats, which are at least 50% heavier than native goats. “The kids from the triple cross have the milking ability, length, and width of the Anglo breed and the meatiness of the Boer goat,” he says. “Doing so would improve the quality of chevon meat in the Philippines like what the Boer goats did to the Feral goats in Australia, which catapulted the country to be the number one exporter of chevon meat to the world market.”

According to Art, nutrition plays an important role for Boer goats to attain their full potential in terms of weight gain and reproduction. In his farm, he has develop a successful feeding program for his Boer goats. “Although it is quite expensive the results will justify the additional cost,” he says.

Goats are fed a lot of napier grass, centrosema, stylo, ipil-ipil, trichantera, rensonii and indigofera (which are fertilized with goat manure) plus concentrates, urea, vitamins and minerals. The feeding system developed is geared towards selling quality and good-looking breeders with smooth and shiny hair coat.

“The focus of supplemental grain feeding starts before breeding and one month after breeding for multiple births,” Art informs. “The does are then released to pasture and given minimal concentrate until one month before kidding. Then they are brought back to the kidding house and are fed 800 grams of concentrate plus the usual napier grass and legumes. This makes for heavier kids at birth, more milk production during lactation, and heavier kids at weaning.”

Studies conducted by livestock experts show that supplemental grain feeding helps meet the required amount of energy, protein, vitamins, calcium and phosphorus needed in Boer goat breeding and production. Palatability is one aspect often neglected by goat raisers in their search for cheap source of ingredients. This is important so that the goats will not be off feed which could result to bloat.

However, like most ventures, there are some issues and concerns. “Today, after establishing over a hundred heads of productive full-blood Boer does producing quality breeders, we are facing a market limited to certain areas because Luzon is still not declared free from foot-and-mouth disease (FMD),” Art laments. “We want to tap the market of the whole county and possibly Malaysia but we need the support of the Department of Agriculture to remove the restriction of animal movement with the declaration of Luzon as FMD-free.”

But despite this, Art believes there is a bright future for goat industry in the country. As he puts it: “The future for goat raising is very bright with the entry of private investment in quality breeding stock from Australia. With the advancement of goat raising technology and genetics in the country, there is no way but up. The potential of developing goat meat market is there, we just need to establish a steady supply and standard for goat meat.”

Live goat exports for the first nine months of 2007 totalled 62,331 head – up 103% year-on-year and the highest since 2002 (Australian Bureau of Statistics). Record numbers to Malaysia have underpinned shipments this year.

Strong demand for Australian goats from Malaysia has provided the impetus for the increased shipments during 2007. Exports to Malaysia for the first nine months of 2007 stood at a record 47,497 head, with very large shipments recorded during May (7,642 head), August (9,859 head) and September (6,663 head).

With another three months of shipments still remaining for the year, 2007 should see a new calendar year record set, surpassing the 52,755 head recorded in 2002. While Malaysia has dominated exports during 2007, taking 74% of total shipments, numbers to other markets have been inconsistent.

Indonesia remains the second largest destination for Australian goats in 2007, with 5,928 head, despite only taking shipments in May and June. Significant shipments throughout 2007 have also been sent to Thailand (2,300 head), Oman (1,874 head), Singapore (1,192 head), New Zealand (1,144 head) and Brunei (1,000 head).

The largest number of goats exported live during 2007 have been sourced from NSW (21,959 head), followed by SA (14,703 head), Queensland (9,515 head) and WA (9,219 head).

The Boer goat is a meat animal quite different in appearance to our present goats. Introduced to Australia from South Africa in 1994, it has already had a significant impact on the Australian goat meat industry. Goat meat is the most consumed meat in the world with consumption of about 3 million tonnes a year and rising. Australia is already the worlds largest exporter of goat meat based on a large feral goat population and the value is around $27 million a year. Most exports go to Asia especially Taiwan, Malaysia and Korea. Exports represent 90% of the product and there has been very little effort put into the local market. Taiwan demand is increasing 10% per year. Goat meat is consumed in Hindu, Moslem and Buddhist countries where there are no restrictions provided it is killed and handled according to religious procedures.

The importance of the Boer goat is its demonstrated ability to increase the growth rate and quality of the meat as compared to the feral goat population. By world standards Australian feral goats rate highly as meat producers. The use of Boer bucks or semen can give further significant gains.

Goat meat products fall into three categories. Capretto is meat from milk fed kids which dress out at between 6 and 10 kg. They are less then five months old. Chevon from goats which dress out between 14 and 16 kgs. Heavy grade from goats over 35 kg live weight. Dressed weight is about 50% of live weight.

2. Physical Requirements
As with goats in general the Boer goat is a very hardy animal. However while it has the ability to survive even in hot dry climates and on rough forms of fodder, good management and attention to feed needs will enhance meat production.

Good fencing of similar standard to cross bred sheep is important for control. They can readily be trained by the use of electric fences.
Maremma guardian dogs can be bonded to the goats to protect kids from foxes.

3. Production Methods
Australia's current goat meat industry comes mainly from wild harvesting of the feral population. There is community pressure to eradicate them because of damage to the fragile environments which they habitat. The Boer goat provides opportunity to develop a controlled or formalised goat farming industry.

A starting point is a herd of feral or commercial goats with a Boer goat buck to produce crosses and start the program. Other options available are the purchase of pure bred females. A pedigreed buck run with does will service up to 200, but to achieve a programmed kidding period one buck per 50 does will be needed. Embryo transplants are also used with between 15-25 embryo produced per doe.

For stocking purposes, goats are regarded as having similar dry sheep equivalent (D.S.E's) to merino wethers. Goats browse graze and will eat coarse grasses, weeds, shrubs and leaves of trees within their reach. For this reason up to 30% of normal can be run in conjunction with sheep without reducing the sheep numbers. There is also potential to use them as part of weed control programs.

Fencing, watering, shelter and loading facilities are as for sheep, as is general management. However goats do not need crutching or shearing.

Boer goat are very efficient feed to meat converters and are capable of weight gains of 200 grams daily under intensive conditions.

Does can be joined at 10 months of age but to avoid inhibiting growth common practice is to join at 19 months. They cycle every 18-21 days year round. A stocky sleek, robust animal, the Boer goat does not need shearing, and is not subject to fly strike. Twins are common and a kidding rate of 150% can be expected. Boer bucks can be fertile as early as 4 months, so must be weaned before this time.

The advent of a permanent water supply via the Murray River pipelines makes watering and so farming of Boer goats possible. Careful management could capitalise on stubble and stubble straws of various crops as a feed source, possibly adding to environmental sustainability. It is interesting to note that our very first generation farmers were stubble retainers because of the need to feed bullocks which was their power source. Stubble burning came in which bullocks were phased out, and was probably the first father/son conflict over changing technology.

Boer goats could open opportunities to develop organic farming systems in the Mallee, producing goat meat while managing stubbles, utilising pastures, supplementary feeding and contributing fertiliser through animal droppings.

4. Marketing
As with any new enterprise it is essential to investigate and be comfortable with market outlets and arrangements before proceeding. Successful marketing will require consistent supply and quality according to the demands of targeted markets. At this stage the main meat market is for capretto.

The market potential does seem to be large and processors can be expected to develop as production increases. There is a licensed export processor at Wycheproof while a company at Warracknabeal has established a live animal export market to Malaysia.

Boer Goat Farming Project In UPM

At present, a total of 72 adults of Boer species from South Africa were breaded out of which three are males and others are females. UPM had allocated 4 acres of land for the project that are planted with Napeir grasses.

The average ratio for male and female is 1:20 where the female will give birth 1 or 2kids at once which will take around 9 to 12 months before become as an adult. The mortality rates among the species are 2%. The mating between male and female will be done in-house to reduce parasite disease problem.

The Boer species were feed with Napier grasses as well as pellets at a ratio of 70kg to 30kg. Napier grasses are chosen as it will grow faster and were liked by the animal compared with other types of grasses. The Boer species were preferred compared with local goats is mainly because local species will produce only 25kg of meat in a year compared the Boer species which will produce 65kg of meat. An adult Boer can fetch RM 500 at a market price.

In order to start Boer goat farming project, a farmer should invest between RM150,000to RM 200,000 with minimum number of Boer species should around 100 to 150. Besides high capital, better knowledge on breeding also a pre-requisite as proper animal husbandry is important to reduce the mortality rate. In this regard, UPM will give adequate training and assistance for those who have interest as well as capital before starts Boer breeding farming project.

Quality Of Boer Goat Meat And Other Products With Reference To Australia

Trials carried out to compare various types of meat showed that goat meat had far less calories, fat and saturated fat than all other types of meat tested including chicken. It also had much higher protein and iron levels and was second only to chicken for caloric content.

The Capretto goat carcasses of the trial on average produce 61.1% muscle with less than 1.0mm of fat thickness (measured at the 12th rib). Chevon animals dress out slightly better (65.9% muscle) but had an increased fat thickness (2.6mm). Scrotal, kidney and pelvic fat also increased slightly with age.

Various cuts of meat are preferred throughout the world. Capretto (entirely milk fed and live weight less than 20kg) is favoured by most markets and thus brings in a premium price. However frozen carcasses of all types represent seventy-seven percent of all world trade. Such carcasses may be boned or bone-in cuts and are often packaged in 1.5 to 2kg lots. This size is ideal for markets such as India where goat meat is used in curries and casseroles. Chilled portions are also very popular, particularly young lean animals destined for the restaurant trade.

A sampling of goat meat, chevon, by nineteen leading Brisbane chefs produced very favourable comments. The chefs found that the meat to be versatile with a good texture, an aroma that was soft, and not strong as most chefs expected. This is not surprising when it is considered that more goat meat is eaten in the world than any other meat.

Australia is the leading exporter of goat meat in the world. In 1991-2 for example, Australia exported over eleven thousand (11,000) tonnes of goat meat values at over twenty million dollars ($20 million).

The major markets for Australian goat meat include Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, USA, the Caribbean and Europe. The reason for such a widely diverse market can be attributed to both traditional preferences and the fact that there are few, if any, religious or cultural taboos limiting the consumption of goat meat. A breakdown of Australian exports of goat meat can be found in Appendix G of this report.

The market for goat meat is varied with different cuts being preferred in the different countries and ethnic groups. Goat products exported by Australia include chilled and frozen carcasses (bone-in / bone-out), live goats, sacrificial goats, goat offal, skins and leather, and Halal slaughtered carcasses.

The Australian domestic market is severely under supplied with goat meat, particularly in the capital cities. Preferred by ethnic communities such as Italian, Greek, Lebanese, Indian, Chinese and other Asian groups, the domestic market is virtually untapped. Potential exists for both chilled and frozen bone-in and bone-off meat for personal consumptions as well as restaurants and smallgoods manufacturers. The major factors affection the growth of the meat goat industry include a lack of consistent supply, lack of market requirements, and a lack of adequate slaughtering facilities.

Goat meat is generally described by two age related term: Capretto young milk fed goat kids; and Chevon young goats. The Capretto is the most favoured cut, with the meat being a pale or pink colour and very tender. It comes exclusively from unweaned kids of less that 10kg dressed weight. Chevon on the other hand comes from older kids and young goats up to 20kg dressed weight.

Capretto and Chevon are both highly praised for their low calories and fat levels and high protein and iron values. In one trial where the amount of cholesterol per 100g of meat was measured it was shown that beef had 880% more cholesterol than goat meat. Lamb scored in a similar fashion with 1040% more cholesterol. On the fat count red meat (beef and lamb) was found to have five times the fat content of goat meat. This leanness in young goats is due to the fact that the muscle tissue contains approximately 75% water and thus care needs to be taken in its preparation.

A survey of Australian goat sales, both domestic and export, between 1996 and 2004 shows a seasonal variation around religious festivals, predominately Christmas, Easter and Ramadan. The trend over recent years (1995 to 2002) has shown a steady rise in live goat and carcass exports. While the price per kilogram for goat meat (excluding Capretto) has remained steady over the study period (2003 - 2004).

Other Goat Products
The most obvious by-product from the goat industry apart from meat is leather. Australia imports $9 million worth of goat leather every year and exports goats skins valued at about $2 million. Australia does not normally export fully tanned goat skins but prefers to export them semi-processed for finishing overseas. In 1991-92 exports of fresh, salted, dried, limed or pickled goat skins were valued at about $2 million.

Asia is the major producer of goatskins in the world, accounting for approximately seventy percent (70%) of total world production. As a general rule developing countries import raw hides and skins from developed countries to be processed and re-exported as value added products. In countries such as China, Pakistan and India the demand for raw skins from their domestic markets outstrips production and thus these countries are forced to import raw skins for processing.

Goat leather is a general purpose leather used in a wide variety of applications such as footwear, garments and luggage. It is in high demand due to its good physical properties of toughness and flexibility, its soft feel and visual appearance. Between 60 and 70 percent of goat skins are used for the upper leather of shoes. The remaining amounts are used for book binding, fancy goods, clothing and gloves. World trade in leather shoes has expanded strongly over the last two decades with an average growth rate of approximately seven percent (7%) annually.

Leather from Boer goats is thicker and stronger than other goat types and takes well to tanning making it an excellent commercial by-product. The higher value goat skins are those that have a fine grain appearance and usually come from smaller goat breeds as well as young kids. The grain appearance, and thus value, deteriorates with increases to live weight and skin surface area. Premium fine-grain skins usually come from goats with a live weight of less than twenty-five kilograms (25kg). Another sought after characteristic of goat leather is its ability to drape, which is only achievable from thinner skins, and is highly prised in the garment industry along with consistency and precision of colour.

The Australian goat skin market has suffered badly be the reliance on feral animal that produce an inferior skin due to course grain resulting from a larger hair follicle. This low quality means that only thirty percent (30%) of the skins produced are of commercial grade and even this is suitable for only the inexpensive lower end of the market such as work gloves. In a similar way angora goat skins are considered inferior to all other goat breeds.

In Australia goatskins are a by-product of the goat meat industry and as such are looked upon as of secondary value. This results in the goats not being sorted prior to slaughter on the basis of skin quality or breed type which is standard practice in other countries. As a result skins of different qualities and sizes are grouped together for sale. The need to sort these salted skins at the tannery increases the cost to the buyer and also makes it extremely difficult to meet client's requirements for particular quality or characteristics of skins. In Australia skins are only graded according to skin size which is unacceptable to most leather producing countries such as Italy and China.

Another peculiarity of the Australian goat industry is that Australia does not export the more lucrative kid skins. This is due mainly to the demand for skin-on carcasses exported into Asia. In fact over fifty percent (50%) of Australian processed goat carcasses are sold de-haired with the skin on.

One factor inhibiting the Australian goat leather industry is the relatively high cost of labour with respects to international competitors. Because of this and other factors the majority of skin exporters prefer to process to the salted and pickled stages rather than produce fully finished leather. Import duties of between twenty five and forty percent (25% - 40%) on skins at the wet-blue stage imposed by most importing countries further reduces profits and restricts Australian exports.

A Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) study of the potential of the Australian Goat Skin Industry can assist in determining the viability of one section goat farming.

Offal is another by-product of the goat meat industry. Generally frowned upon in Australia, offal is a normal part of the diet and rituals of other regions particularly Muslim countries.

SPEAKING UP

AN order of lamb chops from a posh restaurant will bring you a nicely-done meat of sheep from the kitchen. Tender and succulent with the right proportion of meat and fat – undisputed characteristics of premium grade lamb chops. Alas they are flown from New Zealand or Australia, either chilled or frozen.

You may ask: “Why can’t we be served with Made in Malaysia lamb chops?” Your inquisitiveness may soon be rewarded when our goat industry starts to produce “chevon chops” from young Malaysian bred goats. Yes, chevon chops from goats as lamb chops from sheep.

Lately we have been seeing more local investment in goat farming. More goats are being reared today than in 2003. There are about 20,000 farmers currently involved in goat farming.

“By 2020 the country is envisaged to have 3.2 million goats reared for breeding,” says Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin, Director-General of the Department of Veterinary Services, Malaysia. “These goats will be the production units to supply 68% of the national requirement for goat meat in 10 years’ time.”

In tandem with this development, the Government has encouraged the setting up of more specialised stock farms to generate high quality goats for breeding. Goats from these farms will supply the improver seedstock to uplift the productivity of goats in the industry.

The joint effort of Mardi and the Department of Veterinary Services has realised the setting up of several Boer goat multiplication farms. Added to that, the East Coast Economic Corridor Development Council has also supported the establishment of such a farm in Terengganu. As is crucial in the other industries, goat marketing has yet to be developed. Currently the many players in the industry have their own strategies to cater to the different market segments – breeding farms, slaughter markets, organic fertiliser processors.

A private sector driven marketing system encompassing all players in the value chain may solve some of the hiccups in the trading and production of meat goats in this country. Why meat from Boer goats and not from our own indigenous Kajang goats? As far as meat yield is concerned, no other breed has yet to surpass the productivity of Boer goats.

At a similar age of slaughter (12 months), Boer goats produce 30% more meat than Kajang. On two hectares of land, Boer goats yield 210% more kilogrammes of live weight than Kajang goats. Loin portion – from where chevon chops are cut – of Boer goats is 40% heavier than Kajang. Besides, there are many other plus factors when raising Boer goats – ability to breed all year round, and general adaptability to many habitats.

This is not to deny the many virtues of Kajang goats. They are hardy and thrive on poor feeding environment, among others. We need to concurrently improve the Kajang goats by getting them to produce more meat per kilogramme of feed. We could do so by upgrading the local Kajang goats with the Boer. A similar path could also be opted for Jamnapari goats.

Many more things need to be done to get the level of local production to reach the critical mass beyond the breeding phase. Good nutrition is crucial to ensure the productivity potential of Boer goats is not hindered.

Goat rearers require the right skill and knowledge in the husbandry of goats. Use of modern reproductive biotechnologies involving the manipulation and utilisation of semen, embryos and other ovarian products, needs to be explored and commercially applied.

Kajang and other Asiatic goat breeds should be exploited to add to the much needed population of breeder goats, surrogate mothers and replacements. The feeding of goats in the breeding farms and feedlots has to be intensified with more efficient use of locally available feedstuffs, including by-products from rice and oil palm.

Opportunities abound to cater to the demand of the global halal market of which goat meat could form a substantial portion in the coming years.

Professor Mohamed Ali Rajion of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Universiti Putra Malaysia has even attempted to produce health-enhancing chevon containing increased concentration of unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids.

Much has been said about reinventing agriculture as a third engine of economic growth for Malaysia. Goat farming, when done systematically, can enable the smallholders in the villages to sustain a reasonable income. Going big commercially in the production of goat meat and breeding stock has its role in the national agenda to increase agricultural productivity of the country.

Perhaps this time around we could collectively realise the popular aspiration of meeting our own food needs and being less dependable on outside supplies. And chevon from local goats is surely a nutritious item on the family menu.

Abstract:
This review concludes that growth rates of Boer goats are generally lower than sheep and, under favourable nutritional conditions, weight gains of more than 200 g per day can be obtained compared with up to 176 g per day under extensive subtropical conditions. Lactation and pregnancy have a marked effect on metabolizable energy intake, and pregnant does have been shown to have improved feed conversion ratio (6.06 kg/kg) compared with virgin does (10.96 kg/kg). Feed intake, growth and milk yield of does and birth weight of kids are reduced if diets containing less than 6% crude protein are given. Little information is available on mineral requirements of goats. The carcass of Boer goats is generally leaner, less compact and has different carcass proportions from sheep. The relatively high collagen contents with lower solubility of Boer goat meat, has meant that the eating quality has been regarded as inferior to that of lamb and mutton. Breeding holds the key to improving tenderness of goat meat; different slaughtering techniques can be used as well. Boer goats have high potential as meat animals when yielding 3 kid crops in 2 years and when fed to gain more than 200 g/day.

Goat v. Sheep

Goat is goat. Lamb or Mutton is a Sheep. Lamb is a sheep less than a year old, typically slaughtered between the ages of 4 and 12 months (meat less tougher and easy to consume). Older sheep is called mutton and has a much stronger flavor and tougher meat that many find distasteful. Mutton was a cheap food source for the military, and it was often overcooked and dry. Here in Malaysia, mamak restaurant cook it as a curry but they claim it as a goat meat!! and u get charge at goat meat price! The data u shown about malaysia import of goat is a figure mixed of sheep (lamb,mutton) and goat. I think the actuall goat import for a year is less than 1 million (around 800,000 goat a year) and the rest is a sheep meat. Maybe you should study the data. Thanks!

Ouch!!! Is this the true market price (average though it may be) of lamb / mutton consumption per kg in Malaysia? Is this the “huge market” touted by the Ministry of Agriculture?

Then, one must wonder what the advisors to the former Minister of Agriculture must have been smoking when they advised him that Malaysia may need 10 m goats!!! Presumably to be sold at RM28 per kg nett!!!

Or was it what the newspaper journalists must have been smoking!!!!

DALAM kebanyakan projek penternakan kambing, selain daripada aktiviti pengeluaran hasil itu sendiri, aspek pemasaran juga tidak kurang pentingnya malah ia mampu memberikan pulangan lumayan. Pengamatan semasa oleh Jabatan Perkhidmatan Haiwan (JPH) menunjukkan bahawa penghasilan ternakan kambing lebih banyak dijual sebagai baka memandangkan permintaan yang tinggi sehingga menyebabkan bekalan tidak mencukupi. Namun, selain baka, hasil ladang yang boleh dipasarkan juga meliputi baja organik, ternakan kaprima sembelihan, susu segar, bunga dan tanaman hiasan serta susu perisa atau dadih.

Secara perbandingannya, harga di peringkat ladang bagi kambing kacukan per berat hidup pada tahun 2000 bagi kambing betina kacukan ialah RM9 sekilogram, manakala jantan pula RM14 sekilogram Kedudukan harga runcit daging kambing tempatan pada 2002 pula ialah RM18.27 sekilogram dan dipasarkan melalui beberapa saluran seperti pasar tani, pasar basah dan pasar malam, restoran dan gerai makan, pasar raya atau outlet makanan segera.

Strategi Pemasaran

Kejayaan pemasaran kambing pedaging dan produk atau hasil kambing banyak bergantung kepada mutu strategi yang diguna pakai dalam usaha pemasaran yang dirancang.

Antara strategi yang telah dikena pasti termasuk:

● Penghasilan produk yang berkualiti dengan harga yang berpatutan.
● Piawaian tatacara pengurusan (pengeluaran) kambing yang seragam.
● Ladang bebas penyakit (Disease Free Farm) melalui skim amalan ladang ternakan (SALT).
● Berskala besar dengan teknologi tinggi yang mampu mengurangkan kos pengeluaran sekali gus menjadikannya produk yang lebih berdaya saing.
● Pembangunan berkelompok untuk menjurus kepada sesuatu permintaan pasaran dalam dan luar negara.

Konsep pembangunan berkelompok yang diterajui oleh sesebuah syarikat induk juga bertujuan untuk membolehkan bekalan sesuatu permintaan dipenuhi dengan kemas dan berterusan.

Strategi pembiakan untuk sesuatu pasaran atau musim pasaran.

Pemasaran hasil ladang khususnya kambing-kambing seharusnya dirancang mengikut permintaan pasaran yang mana pendekatan ini dapat membantu pemasaran hasil di samping menawarkan harga yang lebih baik. Bagi tujuan ini, pengusaha perlu mengira ke hadapan (tempoh bunting dan enam bulan pemeliharaan) serta mengahwinkan kambing-kambing mereka setahun lebih awal. Ini antara lain bertujuan untuk menyediakan mereka kepada permintaan bermusim seperti perayaan yang tinggi.

Penggunaan Teknologi ICT dan e-Dagang

Seiring dengan kecanggihan teknologi, pemasaran hasil ternakan kambing juga seharusnya mendukung hasrat kerajaan yang mahu ia dipasarkan secara meluas termasuk menerusi e-Dagang. Laman web ini juga boleh digunakan untuk tujuan promosi, membentuk rangkaian, tempahan bekalan dan iklan pemasaran selain daripada sumber ilmu. Jabatan Perkhidmatan Haiwan misalnya, telah pun membangunkan satu laman web yang mampu memberikan perkhidmatan e-Dagang termasuk bagi pemasaran kambing pedaging dan hasilnya. Promosi Produk

Bagi memastikan hasil ternakan kambing diketahui ramai, JPH dengan kerjasama Lembaga Pemasaran Pertanian Persekutuan (FAMA) turut menjalankan usaha mempromosikan produk sebaik bekalan mencukupi. Ini memandangkan masyarakat kita tidak mendapat maklumat yang cukup bahawa daging kambing adalah merupakan 64 peratus daripada penggunaan daging ruminan di seluruh dunia.

Pendekatan pembangunan projek menggunakan konsep inkubator

Pendekatan membangunkan projek melalui konsep ini sedang diusahakan di beberapa kawasan dan JPH sedang menilai perkembangan pendekatan ini dengan dibantu oleh Unit Pembangunan Usahawan Kementerian Pertanian dan Institut Pengurusan Veterinar Cheras. Secara asasnya, JPH menggalakkan beberapa syarikat ternakan swasta yang berminat memulakan sendiri bidang usaha dan selepas berjaya serta boleh dijadikan contoh, mereka diminta pula melatih pengusaha kambing tradisional lain. Pengusaha tradisional ini setelah dilatih akan digalakkan memohon pinjaman daripada Bank Pertanian Malaysia untuk mentransformasikan bidang usaha sedia ada kepada tahap komersial.

Syarikat swasta yang melatih penternak ini akan membangunkan semula projek serta perkhidmatan selepas jualan dan JPH akan memberikan perkhidmatan Lawatan Terancang Berjadual (LTJ) bermula bermula pada waktu tersebut. Buletin 08 : KPMNJ terokai bidang ternakan Kambing Boer

Kluang : Sesuai dengan saranan kerajaan yang memartabatkan bidang pertanian itu sebagai perniagaan, Koperasi Permodalan Melayu Negeri Johor (KPMNJ) tidak ketinggalan menjadikan bidang ternakan sebagai salah suatu bidang baru bagi menambah punca pendapatan koperasi.

Sebagai langkah awal, KPMNJ memulakan ternakan kambing Boer sejumlah 100 ekor induk betina dan lima ekor jantan Boer bermula Februari 2008. Sebuah kandang kambing dibina dalam kawasan Ladang Koperasi Melayu di Kahang, Kluang bagi tujuan itu.

Kandang kambing terbabit berukuran 100 kaki persegi x 30 kaki persegi, mampu menempatkan sehingga 300 ekor kambing pada satu masa.

Lantai kandang disimen dengan anggaran kecerunan pada kadar 1:10 bagi memudahkan kerja-kerja mencuci dan pembersihan. Najis kambing pula diproses menjadi baja.

Kambing Boer adalah sejenis ternakan yang mudah dipelihara kerana cepat menyesuaikan diri dengan alam sekeliling dan diternak kerana dagingnya.

Aktiviti ternakan daging mampu memberi pulangan sampingan yang lumayan dan dapat memenuhi permintaan dan keperluan daging tempatan.

Ketika ini dianggarkan permintaan daging tempatan hanya mampu dipenuhi sekitar 10 peratus sahaja, dan selebihnya terpaksa diimport.

Ini membawa erti bahawa permintaan masyarakat terhadap daging di negara ini adalah tinggi berbanding pengeluarannya.

KPMNJ menghantar beberapa anggota pekerjanya menghadiri pelbagai kursus dan latihan berkaitan pengendalian ternakan kambing . Antaranya ialah yang dianjur oleh Perfect Agro Sdn Bd pada 28 hingga 30 Januari 2008 lalu di Sepang, Selangor.

Anggota pekerja yang dihantar termasuk Pengurus Ladang, Pengurus Pembangunan Perniagaan, Eksekutif Pembangunan Perniagaan, Pegawai Akaun dan tiga pekerja ladang koperasi.

Kesemua mereka ini adalah antara pihak yang bertanggungjawab mengurus dan mengendalikan termasuk mengawal selia kambing yang terdapat di Ladang Koperasi Melayu.

Pada 12 Februari 2008, Pengurus Ladang dan Pegawai Jabatan Perkhidmatan Haiwan , Encik Jaafar telah ke pusat transit kambing di Sepang untuk melakukan pemilihan kambing untuk dihantar ke Ladang Koperasi Melayu. Kesemua 105 ekor Kambing Boer telah selamat tiba ke Ladang Koperasi Melayu tepat jam 8.30 malam pada hari yang sama. Seorang kakitangan Perfect Agro Sdn. Bhd. telah ditempatkan di Ladang Koperasi Melayu selama 14 hari bagi membantu kerja-kerja permulaan penternakan dan memberi khidmat nasihat.

Kambing jantan Boer akan mula berahi ketika berumur 6-9 bulan. Anak-anak jantan mula digalakkan untuk mengawan seawal umur 1 tahun. Kambing betina Boer pula akan mula mencapai tahap matang pada umur 10-12 bulan. Kambing Boer yang telah diperolehi oleh KPMNJ kini berada dalam lingkungan purata umur 7 bulan bagi jantan dan betina. Bagi keperluan rumput potong harian, seluas 1 ekar telah diperuntukkan untuk tanaman rumput Napier. Rumput tersebut akan dipotong, diracik menggunakan mesin dan diangkut ke dalam kandang. Selain itu, kambing juga diberi makan makanan sampingan lain seperti makanan organik dan daun kelapa sawit.

Pada 27 Mac 2008 Anggota Lembaga KPMNJ telah melakukan lawatan ke Ladang Koperasi Melayu untuk melihat dengan lebih dekat projek ternakan Kambing Boer ini. Untuk memperkembangkan lagi projek ternakan kambing Boer pada masa akan datang, KPMNJ bercadang memperkenalkan projek ternakan kambing yang melibatkan ahli Skim Program Kesejahteraan Rakyat (SPKR) di Daerah Mersing.

Skim saham kambing?? Saya terbaca berita yang menarik di Utusan mengenai satu skim Saham Kambing atau Qiradh An- Am yang dilaksanakan oleh Koperasi Permodalan Melayu Negeri Johor (KPMNJ). Memang menarik sekali dengan menggunakan kambing sebagai modalnya..

Pengerusinya, Prof. Madya Datuk Mohamad Ali Hasan berkata, skim tersebut merupakan rentetan daripada projek perintis kambing boer yang dijalankan di Kahang, Kluang.
Beliau berkata, pengenalan skim berkenaan juga sejajar dengan pembangunan pesat Iskandar Malaysia terutamanya dalam sektor makanan dan pemprosesan agro.
“Dengan skim berkenaan, ahli koperasi dipelawa untuk menyuntik modal bagi projek penternakan kambing boer sekali gus menikmati pendapatan yang telah dijana.
“Namun harus diingat, semua ahli yang berminat perlu menjadi ahli yang aktif,” katanya kepada pemberita selepas menghadiri Mesyuarat Agung Perwakilan KPMNJ ke-14, di sini hari ini.

Pelaburan yang dilaksanakan oleh KPMNJ memang bagus sekali.. Ye la selain dapat meningkatkan modal ianya sekaligus memberikan pulangan kepada ahli koperasi. Selain dari pulangan duit mungkin boleh dapatkan kambing kalau ada majlis-majlis tertentu. Malahan tinjanya boleh dibuat baja.. . Menarik betul..

Dikatakan ternakan kambing berkembang 8.67% pada tahun 2004, 9.73% pada tahun 2005 dan 18.75% pada tahun 2006 dan sekarang dianggarkan ada 300,000 ekor kambing. Manakala ternakan biri-biri berkembang sebanyak 0.47%, 0.35% dan 1.10% masing-masing bagi tahun2004, 2005 dan 2006.

Pengeluaran daging mutton (kambing & biri-biri) negara pada tahun 2006 hanyalah 1,600 tan bernilai RM40.61 juta. Berbanding pada tahun yang sama, Malaysia mengimport 133,335 ekor kambing/biri-biri (RM43.62 juta), 16,086 tan metrik mutton (RM155.64 juta).

Self-sufficiency level (%) pada tahun 2006 ialah 8.99% dan dijangka naik kepada 10% pada tahun 2010, manakala per capita consumption (kg) pula pada tahun 2006 ialah 0.67 dan dijangka 0.7 pada tahun 2010.

Penubuhan ECER akan menjadikan pengeluaran kambing lebih berkesan dan berpusat menerusi kluster industri daging kambing. Tujuan mengujudkan kluster industri kambing adalah untuk mempastikan bekalan yang mencukupi dan berkualiti tinggi serta selamat. Ia juga bagi mempastikan pengeluaran produk daging kambing memenuhi permintaan daging segar tempatan serta memberi tambah nilai kepada industri pemerosesan daging di negara ini.

Kenapa Beralih Kepada Biri-Biri?

INDUSTRI ternakan ruminan tempatan masih bergantung kepada import dalam memenuhi keperluan daging negara.

Justeru, usaha perlu dipertingkatkan supaya hasrat dan matlamat yang masih terlalu jauh itu dapat dicapai.

Dalam industri ternakan kambing, Dasar Kambing Negara yang telah digubal bertujuan meningkatkan pengeluaran daging kambing iaitu meningkatkan populasi asas ternakan kambing mencapai lebih kurang 1.1 juta ekor induk.

Perlu kita ingat bahawa ada dua jenis ternakan berlainan iaitu kambing dan juga biri-biri.

Bagi kaedah pertama mendapatkan kambing, kita terpaksa mendapatkan baka dari luar negara terutama Australia pada harga yang tinggi.

Ini akan menimbulkan masalah untuk mencapai matlamat 1.1 juta ekor induk kerana harganya mahal sedangkan kita boleh mencari alternatif lain.

Pengalaman ini telah dilalui oleh penternak-penternak kaum India yang amat faham tentang keperluan masyarakat Islam yang memerlukan kambing untuk tujuan akikah dan korban.

Oleh itu, tanpa kesedaran orang Melayu, mereka beralih daripada ternakan kambing ke ternakan biri-biri kerana ternakan ini mencapai kematangan lebih cepat iaitu setahun berbanding kambing yang memerlukan masa dua tahun.

Selain itu, ternakan biri-biri ini memerlukan kos yang rendah sahaja untuk perubatan dan kos pengeluaran menyeluruh lebih rendah daripada kambing kerana ketahanan daripada serangan penyakit lebih tinggi.

Memilih biri-biri

Pada masa sama, masyarakat Melayu lebih cenderung memilih daging biri-biri berbanding kambing.

Oleh kerana kematangannya cepat, bekalan daging biri-biri boleh ditingkatkan lebih pantas berbanding kambing biasa.

Pada masa sama, anak bebiri juga boleh hidup berasingan lebih cepat berbanding kambing biasa sekurang-kurangnya setahun baru bercerai susu.

Kedua, bagi meningkatkan keupayaan daya saing dan kemampanan industri usaha pembiakbakaan harus dipertingkatkan. Bukan kambing sahaja, tetapi juga biri-biri yang bersistematik dan tersusun, meningkatkan nilai tambah dan memperkukuhkan penyelidikan dan pembangunan.

Ketiga, menambahbaik persekitaran bisnes dan prasarana industri serta skim insentif melalui pengukuhan dana pembiayaan, mengoptimumkan penggunaan tanah pertanian, merevolusikan pemberian insentif, pengukuhan penyampaian perkhidmatan, zon pengeluaran makanan, sistem maklumat dan pembangunan sumber manusia.

Keempat, pengukuhan langkah sanitari dan fitosanitari (SPS) dengan meningkatkan program kawalan penyakit untuk melancarkan pemasaran produk di dalam dan luar negara.

Kelima ialah menambahbaik kualiti produk dan bahan tambah nilai dengan perlaksanaan skim Amalan Ladang Ternakan yang baik (SALT) .

Sejajar dengan hasrat kerajaan bagi menjayakan Dasar Pengeluaran Daging Kambing Negara, kerajaan telah pun menubuhkan Pusat Pembiakan Boer Nasional (NBBC) yang menyediakan pelan rangkaian pengeluaran dan pemasaran yang bersistematik dalam kuantiti yang mega dalam negara.

Bagaimanapun di sebalik semua itu, ada sesuatu yang menarik untuk diberi perhatian oleh mereka yang berminat menceburi bidang penternakan.

Ini kerana terlalu ramai yang menanam cita-cita beranjak ke bidang pertanian sejak kerajaan ingin membuka lembaran baru menggalakkan rakyat menceburinya secara komersial.

Namun, senario yang sebenarnya tidak semudah yang disangka apabila mereka yang baru berjinak-jinak dalam bidang penternakan tetapi tidak memiliki keperluan asas seperti modal, kepakaran dan kawasan yang mencukupi.

Ternakan kambing dan lembu pada anggapan biasa memerlukan kawasan yang luas bergantung kepada sistem yang digunakan sama ada fidlot, lepas bebas atau kandang.

Demikian juga apabila bakal penternak ingin mendapatkan baka yang mereka inginkan, maka banyak usaha perlu dilakukan, terutamanya menentukan harga yang mengikut kemampuan dan pasaran.

Mudah kata, menceburi bidang penternakan bukanlah semudah yang difikirkan meskipun ramai telah berjaya mengharunginya dan telah bergelar usahawan ternak.

Kos merupakan salah satu faktor yang memainkan peranan penting menentukan kejayaan usaha tersebut di samping aspek lain yang menjadi keperluan asas seperti kemudahan, ilmu dan tinjauan pasaran.

Antara jalan penyelamat bagi mereka yang ingin memulakan usaha penternakan ruminan terutamanya kambing ialah bermula secara kecil-kecilan.

Konsep penggunaan kemudahan infrastruktur yang mudah ini boleh dipraktikkan kerana ia bukan sahaja menjimatkan kos tetapi mudah dikatakan sangat selesa untuk kambing.

Ciri-cirinya ialah kandang kambing dibina di atas tanah tanpa menggunakan tiang seperti lazimnya yang diamalkan penggunaan bahan terbuang seperti kayu, papan dan hanya memerlukan kawasan kecil.

Bagi kawasan yang terhad, ia hanya mampu memuatkan sejumlah 400 ekor kambing ternakan pada satu-satu masa.

Konsep tersebut kini dilaksanakan oleh sebuah syarikat tempatan, Buani Sdn. Bhd. sejak beberapa bulan lepas yang melibatkan pelbagai jenis baka kambing seperti Boer, Barbados dan Jamnapari dan Dopper.

Kawasan ternakan yang dibuka di Jalan Aman, Sungai Merab Tengah, Kajang, Selangor di kawasan tanah seluas kira-kira empat ekar kini telah menunjukkan pencapaian yang memberangsangkan.

Kawasan ladang itu yang dibina menggunakan bahan terbuang tetapi tetap dilengkapi dengan pelbagai kemudahan asas sebagai sebuah ladang ternakan yang lengkap.

Ladang tersebut pada mulanya diusahakan untuk penternakan kambing Boer tetapi diubah kepada pelbagai baka supaya lebih berdaya maju.

Menurut penasihat ladang tersebut Datuk Dr. Alang Perang Zainuddin, konsep ladang tersebut telah diubah dari 100 peratus baka Boer kepada hanya separuh baka kambing berkenaan, manakala bakinya dikhaskan kepada Barbados (45 peratus) dan Jamnapari sebanyak lima peratus.

''Saya nampak baka Barbados sesuai untuk dikembangkan tetapi mestilah yang tulen.

''Malah kita akan perkenalkan kaedah pembaikan baka tulen iaitu tanpa mencampurkan jantan baka dengan baka lain," ujarnya.

Beliau yang juga bekas Pengerusi Lembaga Pertubuhan Peladang (LPP), dan dan pernah berkhidmat sebagai profesor di Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) berkata, sejak dibuka syarikat tersebut telah melaburkan kira-kira RM150,000 iaitu RM20,000 untuk pembinaan infrastruktur dan bakinya untuk pembelian ternakan.

Konsep bebas, katanya, adalah persekitaran yang disukai oleh kambing manakala masalah cacing bukan suatu yang perlu dibimbangkan selagi aspek kebersihan dititikberatkan.

Namun ia tidak bermakna konsep tersebut tidak mengamalkan pengurusan yang terbaik, sebaliknya ladang tersebut juga dibina mengikut kesesuaian dan keperluan ternakan.

Malah, sebuah kawasan ladang rumput ternakan yang popular seperti Napier juga ditanam sebagai makanan kambing.

Setelah mencuba beberapa jenis rumput, beliau mengesyorkan penternak menanam rumput Napier India dan Napiter Taiwan kerana memiliki kadar protein yang tinggi sekitar 20 peratus. Jika dibaja dan dan dijaga dengan sendiri mampu mengeluarkan rumput segar yang paling tinggi.

Rumput ini akan terus mengeluarkan hasil berbanding sekoi yang terpaksa ditanam semula selepas empat atau lima kali tuaian.

''Inilah caranya kita boleh mengurangkan kos pengeluaran daging," katanya.

Rumput jenis boleh mengeluarkan hasil untuk makanan terus atau silaj yang amat tinggi.

Alang Perang bercadang memperkenalkan konsep Ladang Kambing Rakyat bagi memberi peluang kepada mereka yang berminat menceburi bidang penternakan mencubanya.

''Semasa saya menjadi Pengerusi LPP, konsep ini telah diperkenalkan dan mereka yang berminat mestilah menjadi ahli PPK (Pertubuhan Peladang Kawasan)," ujarnya.

Menerusi konsep ini, yang diiperkenalkan oleh LPP empat tahun lalu, kos pembangunan ternakan kambing atau biri-biri telah dapat dikurangkan kebiasaannya bagi permulaan, kira-kira 70 peratus kos adalah untuk menyediakan infrastruktur dan 30 peratus untuk baka.

Konsep kambing rakyat ini sebaliknya lebih rendah daripada segi pembangunan iaitu 30 peratus untuk infrastruktur manakala 70 peratus untuk baka.

Syaratnya cukup mudah iaitu penternak mesti menyediakan kawasan penanaman rumput untuk makanan terlebih dahulu .

Ahli-ahli PPK yang telah bermula secara kecil-kecilan dalam industri ini, boleh memohon Skim Pinjaman kambing yang perlu dibayar semula tempoh lima tahun.

Sepanjang tempoh lima tahun ini adalah kritikal kerana kambing itu sempat membiak dan bayaran balik boleh dibuat dalam tempoh munasabah iaitu selepas tiga tahun dan dibayar tempoh sepenuhnya dalam tempoh 60 bulan.

Menerusi konsep ini, tempat itu akan mempunyai kemudahan tempat pembesaran kambing, kandang pembiakan, rumah bersalin, kandang penyusuan anak dan kandang pengemukkan.

Induk-induk yang bunting akan dipindahkan ke rumah bersalin dua minggu sebelum kelahiran anaknya.

Selepas melahirkan, ibu dan anaknya akan bersama selama tiga atau empat minggu untuk tempoh penyusuan.

Kemudian ibu dan anak akan ditempatkan dalam petak komuniti yang disediakan khas dalam kandang bersalin.

Selepas dua bulan setengah bagi biri-biri dan tiga bulan bagi kambing, anak-anak ini diceriakan dengan ibunya, dan ditempatkan ke tempat penggemukan.

Ibunya pula akan ditempatkan dalam kandang pembiakan bersama-sama kambing jantan untuk selama lima bulan setengah untuk pengeluaran seterusnya.

Dalam sistem ini juga, pembakaan diawasi dengan mengelakkan berlakunya sumbang mahram atau in-breeding dengan meletakkan seekor jantan bagi setiap kumpulan kambing betina yang biasanya tidak melebihi 10 ekor.

Untuk mengelakkan sumbang mahram, seekor kambing jantan di satukan dengan sekumpulan kambing betina dan mempunyai nombor tanda dan setiap anak kambing tahu siapa bapa dan ibunya.

Bagi seorang penternak yang berdaya maju, ia mempunyai 300 ekor induk bagi membolehkan ia menjadi usahawan yang menguntungkan yang boleh memberi pendapatan tidak kurang RM1,000 sebulan.

Ini berdasarkan kepada beranak tiga kali dalam dua tahun, bilangan anak yang boleh dilahirkan dalam tempoh itu ialah 1,350 ekor.

Pekan Pengeluar Biri-Biri Negara Dalam ECER

Projek Agropolitan Pekan yang yang telah dirasmikan pada 4 Ogos lepas, bakal menjadikan daerah itu sebagai pusat pengeluar kambing biri-biri negara pada masa hadapan.
Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Majlis Pembangunan Wilayah Ekonomi Pantai Timur (ECERDC), Datuk Jebasingam Issace John berkata, projek agropolitan di Pekan itu melibatkan kawasan seluas 1,825 hektar dengan kos keseluruhan kira-kira RM90 juta.
Beliau berkata, seluas 1,000 hektar kawasan itu akan dimajukan dengan tanaman kelapa sawit manakala bakinya melibatkan projek ternakan kambing biri-biri, perumahan dan pusat penyelidikan.
"Di Agropolitan Pekan, perladangan kelapa sawit dan penternakan kambing biri-biri dikenal pasti sebagai aktiviti utama.
"Aktiviti sekunder seperti inisiatif hiliran berkaitan kelapa sawit dan ternakan kambing biri-biri, industri sarang burung, jahitan, akuakultur dan tanaman cendawan juga disediakan," katanya pada sidang akhbar di Santuary Resort, Cherating di sini hari ini.
Menurut Issace John, seramai 50 peserta dipilih untuk menjayakan projek perintis ternakan kambing biri-biri di kawasan tersebut.
Bagi merealisasikan hasrat tersebut jelas beliau, pihaknya mengimport 1,000 ekor kambing biri-biri dari Australia membabitkan kos hampir RM2 juta.
Secara keseluruhan katanya, projek terbabit akan melibatkan 1,450 keluarga termasuk 750 keluarga Orang Asli.
"Projek tersebut dijangka mewujudkan 5,000 peluang pekerjaan baru dan meningkatkan pendapatan isi rumah miskin tegar daripada RM350 kepada RM1,500," katanya.
Beliau memberitahu, Felda yang berperanan sebagai agensi pelaksana utama akan menguruskan para peserta, projek dan aktiviti berkaitan serta menguruskan aspek kewangan projek tersebut.
ECERDC pula katanya, akan bertindak sebagai fasilitator dan penyelaras keseluruhan projek tersebut bagi memastikan setiap pencapaian projek disiapkan mengikut perancangan.
Beliau turut memberi jaminan hanya penduduk tempatan akan dilibatkan dalam projek tersebut bagi memastikan sasaran membasmi kemiskinan tegar menjelang 2010 tercapai.

Malaysia underpinning live goat exports

Live goat exports for the first nine months of 2007 totalled 62,331 head – up 103% year-on-year and the highest since 2002 (Australian Bureau of Statistics). Record numbers to Malaysia have underpinned shipments this year.

Strong demand for Australian goats from Malaysia has provided the impetus for the increased shipments during 2007. Exports to Malaysia for the first nine months of 2007 stood at a record 47,497 head, with very large shipments recorded during May (7,642 head), August (9,859 head) and September (6,663 head).

With another three months of shipments still remaining for the year, 2007 should see a new calendar year record set, surpassing the 52,755 head recorded in 2002. While Malaysia has dominated exports during 2007, taking 74% of total shipments, numbers to other markets have been inconsistent.

Indonesia remains the second largest destination for Australian goats in 2007, with 5,928 head, despite only taking shipments in May and June. Significant shipments throughout 2007 have also been sent to Thailand (2,300 head), Oman (1,874 head), Singapore (1,192 head), New Zealand (1,144 head) and Brunei (1,000 head).

The largest number of goats exported live during 2007 have been sourced from NSW (21,959 head), followed by SA (14,703 head), Queensland (9,515 head) and WA (9,219 head).

Punca selalu "naik" darah tinggi adalah kerana kandungan kolestrol yang tinggi. Permintaan makanan baik sup atau apa jua resepi berdaging yang dikatakan "daging kambing" bukanlah menjadi punca selalu naik darah tinggi. Apa yang selalu dihidangkan (jika kita tidak benar-benar bertanya) ialah produk bebiri (sheep) daripada bahagian "mutton" atau "lamb", di mana kadar setiap 3 oz. daging mengandungi 78.2g lemak tepu dan 8.1g lemak (berbanding 63.8g dan 2.6g masing-masing bagi kambing). Seekor anak kambing berwajah manusia telah dilahirkan di Turki baru-baru ini. Menurut doktor haiwan, ibu kambing mengalami masalah untuk melahirkan anak memaksa doktor melakukan pembedahan untuk mengeluarkan anak kambing tersebut.
Kepala anak kambing itu memiliki ciri-ciri seperti manusia, dengan hidung, mulut dan mata semuanya menyerupai manusia kecuali telinga je macam kambing.
Makhluk ganjil ini tidak berbulu. Menurut orang kampung, anjing pun takut hendak mendekatinya.
Macam biasa kalau dah keluar anak kambing muka macam manusia, mesti ada orang yang melakukan hubungan seks luar tabii dengan ibu kambing tersebut. Sebab tu lah orang kampung terus bakar anak kambing ganjil ini tanpa memberi peluang untuk ahli biologi mengkajinya terlebih dahulu.

Catatan: Di Malaysia baru-baru ini hanya ada kes kambing dilahirkan berkepala dua. Dua-dua kepala kambinglah. Rujuk pos terdahulu pada bulan Januari 2010.

1. Hadith diriwayatkan oleh Al-Haitam, Umi Hani dan At-Tabrani: "Sesungguhnya Allah Taala menurunkan berkat kepada tiga makhlukNya iaitu Kambing, buah kurma dan api".

PERKATAAN 'halal' membawa erti cara hidup orang Islam yang menitikberatkan toyibban iaitu kesucian, amalan kebersihan dan kehidupan yang sihat serta 'halalan'.

Islam dengan jelas memerintahkan umatnya mengambil sesuatu yang halal dan meninggalkan yang haram berdasarkan firman Allah dan sabda Rasulullah s.a.w seperti dalam Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 172 yang bermaksud: "Wahai orang beriman, makanlah makanan halal yang Kami kurniakan kepada kamu".

Pasaran produk halal bukan saja terhad kepada negara Islam dan penduduk Muslim malah penerimaan terhadap barangan dan perkhidmatan halal kini semakin meluas di kalangan masyarakat bukan Islam.

Ini berikutan peningkatan kesedaran terhadap produk halal yang sinonim dengan produk yang selamat, berkhasiat, bersih dan suci.

Justeru, peluang yang meluas untuk pasaran produk halal seharusnya direbut usahawan, terutama di kalangan usahawan Muslim dengan permintaan produk halal yang tinggi di seluruh dunia. Pengarah Perdagangan Dalam Negeri, Koperasi Dan Kepenggunaan Pahang, Abu Samah Shabudin, berkata perkara yang menyedihkan apabila ramai pengeluar makanan halal datang dari negara bukan Islam.

"Pengeluar utama daging dunia adalah dari Brazil, Amerika Syarikat, Argentina, Australia, Kanada, China, India dan New Zealand.

"Jika di tinjau di Asia Tenggara pula, Thailand sudah membina nama sebagai pengeluar makanan halal," katanya.

Menurutnya, usahawan bukan Islam di negara ini lebih menguasai pengeluaran makanan halal, berbanding usahawan Muslim.

"Bagaimanapun, kita bersyukur kerana masih ada usahawan Muslim yang berusaha untuk berebut peluang menguasai pengeluaran makanan halal.

"Sebagai contoh, syarikat milik penuh Bumiputera dari Kedah, Herba Penawar Al-Wahida (HPA) yang terkenal dengan pelbagai produk harian yang halal.

"Meskipun kita 'malas' memikirkan mengenai isu ini, apa yang membimbangkan ialah kesan kepada diri dan kerukunan bangsa kita pada masa akan datang.

"Iman adalah teras pembentukan jiwa dan peribadi Muslim selain pemakanan halal mampu melahirkan Muslim yang sempurna," katanya.

Pengarah Jati Mahkota HPA cawangan Kuantan, Jaafar Abd Ghani, berkata masyarakat bukan Islam di Malaysia perlu dijelaskan dengan lebih mendalam mengenai konsep halal dan haram makanan mengikut perspektif Islam yang sebenarnya.

"Kita perlu mengubah tanggapan mereka makanan yang halal bukan makanan daripada khinzir saja, tetapi meliputi pelbagai konsep lain yang perlu dijelaskan dengan lebih mendalam.

"Antara konsep yang perlu diambil perhatian adalah punca makanan itu sendiri seperti daging yang digunakan.

"Kebanyakan masyarakat bukan Islam menganggap hanya khinzir makanan yang diharamkan dalam Islam, tetapi mereka perlu dijelaskan mengenai haiwan lain yang haram dimakan seperti haiwan bertaring, haiwan yang hidup dua alam dan binatang yang jijik seperti cicak," katanya.

Katanya, kaedah penyembelihan haiwan juga perlu dijelaskan kepada masyarakat bukan Islam yang kebanyakannya tidak tahu konsep penyembelihan haiwan dalam Islam.

"Peniaga makanan bukan Islam juga perlu memastikan haiwan yang mereka beli di pasaran perlu disembelih oleh syarikat yang mendapat pengiktirafan halal oleh Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (Jakim) sebelum dipasarkan, " katanya.

Menurutnya, cara pengurusan makanan serta pemprosesannya perlu terhindar daripada sebarang najis atau bercampur dengan bahan haram di sisi Islam.

Katanya, campuran bahan makanan juga wajar diberi perhatian sama ada ia bebas dari campuran alkohol atau minyak lemak babi.

"Ada restoran yang mempamerkan lambang halal, tetapi bahan makanannya dicampur dengan alkohol atau barang terlarang di sisi Islam.

"Ia berlaku di kebanyakan restoran serta hotel yang menggunakan khidmat tukang masak luar negara," katanya.

Meat taste and choice varies for different needs.

Sample recipe for BBQ purposes:-

1 cup vinegar
1 cup vegetable/olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 bay leaf, crumbled (powdered is also ok)
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon rosemary (or ketumba and jintan for that localized taste)
1 teaspoon sage
1/2 teaspoon red chilli flakes
1 (5- to 7-pound) leg of goat, boned
2 garlic clovers, skin removed

All blended and rubbed against the meat. Leave it to marinate for a minimum of 3-5hrs in room temperature.

The demand for `chevon', or `cabrito', or `goat meat' in the United States is so high that producers can't keep up. Because of this vacuum, much of the goat meat sold in the United States is imported from New Zealand or Australia. About 1.5 million pounds of goat meat is imported every week. And demand just keeps growing.

Much of the demand is generated by the changing ethnic demographics of the continent. About 63% of the red meat consumed worldwide is goat! Much of the goat meat demand in the United States comes from ethnic groups that include Middle Eastern, Asian, African, Latin American and Caribbean heritage. Most of these groups buy goat meat whenever they can find it, and they are willing to pay better prices for higher quality meat.

What is so special about chevon (goat meat)? Many people have digestive problems that require a careful diet. The molecular structure of chevon is different than that of other meats. Therefore, chevon digests more easily. It is also a low fat, good tasting alternative to chicken or fish. I am one of those people who have to watch what they eat. I can eat chicken, some kinds of fish, turkey and chevon. I prefer chevon from an animal that is at least 75% Boer. The Boer influence changes the taste of the meat to a milder, more veal-like flavor. When you have as few choices in your diet as I do, you learn what you like. I have not had the opportunity to try Kiko or Fainting goat meat. My comparisons are with dairy goat meat.

The Direct Market Niche and the Commercial Meat Herd In our area, if you put out the word that you have meat goats for sale, you usually have enough calls to sell your animals right off your ranch. I get about $1.00 per pound on the hoof. I have had other breeders tell me that they can get more for goats with Boer blood. This is a good example of one way to market your goats - find a profitable direct market niche.

One of the most popular market niches in the meat goat industry today is the direct market. A `direct market' is a group or type of buyer that will come directly to your ranch to buy from you, for a specific reason. There are many direct market niches for meat goats. I have already suggested one type of direct market niche: the ethnic meat market. Another direct market niche involves the growing trend in the 4-H and FFA clubs to raise meat goats. One of the most profitable direct market niches supplies Chevon to the local restaurants that are serving an ethnic clientele. Another direct market niche is the market for meat breeding stock. Commercial meat breeders will usually pay about double, for breeding stock, what you might have expected to receive for the same animal by the pound.

Many breeders are now working together, in cooperatives or associations, to meet large commercial sales contracts. These contracts supply the meat markets on the east and west coasts of the United States, and require a supply of high numbers of animals, of a consistent quality, on a regular basis. At this time, much of the meat for these contracts is being imported because there just are not enough meat goats in the United States to supply the contracts.

In many areas of the country, slaughter houses are being constructed specifically for goat meat. However, almost none of the goats being processed at these facilities are actually meat type goats. There are just not enough meat goats being raised, which are not pre-sold to direct markets, to supply a production facility.

Fullblood Meat Goats
There are several types of 'meat' goats: Boer goats, Tennessee Fainting Goats, Kiko goats, and 'Spanish' goats. However, only three of these are true breeds with breed associations and standardized meat breed characteristics. These are the Boers, Kikos and Tennessee Fainting goats. The 'Spanish' goats are an indigenous goat of the southern United States. There are a couple of breeders who have done a terrific job of breeding these animals up into a very good meat animal. However, no registry or breed standards have been developed at the time of this printing.

Boer goats are large framed animals resembling, in many ways, the Nubian goat. The most striking difference between a Boer goat and any other type of goat you may have seen, is the size. A Boer is a large, double muscled animal developed in Southern Africa specifically for meat and hardiness. They can consistently produce more muscling in less time than any other breed of goat, and will pass this capability to their kids. Boers are vibrantly colored and relatively uniform throughout. They are easy to raise, have mild temperaments, are affectionate, require no milking, no special care, no shearing, and no fancy fences. Boers and Boer crosses also have huge rumen capacity. The Boer goats were developed to clear land that was too difficult to be cleared by humans. They spend a lot more time grazing than other types of goats do. One reason for this, is that they are out grazing in the heat of the day when dairy goats are wilting in the shade. They are also out grazing when the snow is blowing across the pasture. They will graze and thrive on ground that will not support dairy goats without supplementation.

The Kiko goat is a recent development of a New Zealand company called "Goatex Group LLC". These hardy goats were developed as a result of a government funded project to get the native goat population in New Zealand under control. As part of this project, in the 1970's, many goats were hunted and killed, and thousands more were captured to cross with angoras. Some of the native goats confined during this project exhibited enhanced characteristics for growth and meat production. The members of Goatex isolated these animals and began to cross them with hair and milk goats to find a combination that would yield the best results in both hardiness and meat carcass production. The resulting breed was called "Kiko" meaning "meat for consumption" in Maori.

Fainting goats are not huge animals. They average between 17 and 25 inches tall, and weigh between 50 and 165 pounds. They come in a wide variety of coats and colors, with long ears that stand out to the sides of their heads. Fainting goats have very distinctive 'bulgy' eyes. Several breeders have spent a lot of time and energy breeding this basic breed up into an 'improved' meat goat that is larger and heavier and crosses well with Boers.

Fullblood breeding animals are a whole different industry from the meat production industry. However, the two are very closely tied. When you take a look at what you want to raise, you might consider adding at least a few quality fullbloods to your operation. If the meat industry in your area blooms and expands, there will be more demand for good fullblood meat goats. We are heading into an era of serious meat production.

In all livestock industries, there is a place for the good registered herd sire. These animals must be proven to be fertile and prolific, adaptable, disease free, and have the meat and muscle characteristics that will add productivity to a commercial meat herd. It may be a good idea to consider whether or not you want to make the initial investment to start a good breeding stock herd. Or, alternatively, add a few breeding stock to your meat herd, or some meat production stock to your fullblood herd. The two types are not mutually exclusive. As a matter of fact, one usually leads to the other. If you start with a meat herd, but have to add a fullblood herd sire, sometimes you will also be tempted to buy a fullblood doe to go with him. Then you are suddenly producing herd sires for your neighbors. This is a good idea, because one good fullblood sale a year can pay nearly 1/5th of your feed costs for a year (if you are raising 50 goats).

What are the prices on fullblood meat goats expected to be in the long run? Many things will affect the answer to that question. I know a couple who breed fullblood registered angus cattle. How many rural communities have plenty of cattle? How can these people make their money? They market. They have big production sales where breeders come from all over the world, or tie into a satellite link, to buy their stock. I believe that there will always be top breeding stock. People that advertise, raise quality disease free animals, and let the meat producers know they are out there, will always have a market.

As in all industries, the price you will be able to get for good fullblood stock will depend on the quality of your animals and the effectiveness of your advertising. If you do not want to market, you will probably be able to sell your fullbloods to your neighbors at about $250 each, indefinitely. If you are well known, and advertise, and you have animals that make the buyer's head turn, you will probably always be able to get at least $800 for your fullblood meat goats. At the time of this printing the prices for good fullblood stock are about double that amount, and are actually going up. These prices have been stable for three years now, and the market seem to indicate that they will remain firm in the future.

Whether you are interested in raising goats for meat or for breeding, or some combination of the two, meat goats, and goat meat, are here to stay. The market is increasing and expanding, and shows no signs of slowing down. You don't need a lot of specialized equipment to raise meat goats, and you can reasonably plan to raise about 6 does with their kids per acre of good edible vegetation. As an industry, meat goats are replacing beef, hogs and dairy herds nation wide. Meat goats are the newest and fastest growing small acreage industry in the United States.

Breeding season is a time of great potential for the goat producer. This is the time when the genetics are fixed for the next kid crop and all the expectations of the coming year begin. Because of this there are several steps that should be taken to insure success.

Several things should have already been addressed related to selection of animals. The doe herd should have been culled to remove poor performing animals after weaning of the previous kid crop, new replacements have been selected and are ready to be bred. The buck(s) that will be used have been selected and are ready to be placed on pasture. Any new additions to the herd have undergone a receiving period and are out of quarantine before the start of the breeding season. Pastures are ready and breeding pastures are not next to one another or separated by a good electric fence. Bucks will fight through even good fences to breed a doe on the other side so be prepared.

Breeding Information:
• Age at puberty
 Bucks 5 to 8 months
 Does 7 to 10 months
• Estrus Cycle
 Length 18 - 22 days
 Duration 12 – 36 hours
• Buck to Doe Ratio
 Yearling 15 – 20 does per buck
 Mature 20 – 40 does per buck
• Gestation period 5 months (146 - 155 days, average is 150 days)

Preparing the Buck for Breeding:
The buck is very critical to the success of your breeding program. He contributes almost half of all the genetic material of every kid he sires and because of this contributes greatly to the quality of the next kid crop. This is why it is critical that you select good quality bucks that will move your herd in a positive direction. Bucks should be selected well before the start of the breeding season. Health issues exist with bucks and because they are generally the largest goats on the farm and often smell, they tend to be the last animals worked or, in some cases, ignored.

Before the start of the breeding season you need to be sure to evaluate the bucks for body condition. Increase feed levels to insure bucks are in good body condition (body condition 2.5 to 3 on a 5 point scale) before the start of the breeding season. Also make sure that the bucks are receiving a good quality mineral mix, free choice, that has adequate selenium (Se) and copper (Cu). If you are unsure of the Se status of the animals or have had problems with low conception rates, retained placentas or weak kids in the past you may want to give the bucks as Se shot a couple of weeks before the start of the breeding season. Research has indicated that Se has a positive effect on male fertility. The best way to take advantage of this is by providing a good quality mineral mix year round but the shots will help if you have had related problems.

Check the buck’s feet and trim properly. Give enough time between trimming and the start of breeding for any soreness to heal. This allows the buck to move around the pasture better and he will be more successful breeding. Because the buck smell is concentrated on the front legs it is recommended that you use gloves and a long sleeve shirt when handling these animals. Their hooves also tend to be larger than does so be prepared. Treat any signs of foot scald or rot. It may also be a good time to set-up and use a foot bath. A buck with a sore foot will not be as successful breeding.

Parasite control is always an issue in goats. It is recommended that you check the bucks for parasites, both internal and external, and treat if needed. It is not recommended to you treat all animals at breeding so be sure to utilize a selective treatment procedure (FAMACHA or FEC) and deworm with an effective product when necessary.

In general it is not necessary to have a fertility test conducted on your bucks. First it is difficult to find a veterinarian that will perform this service and many have indicated that fertility of the buck is seldom a problem. The libido or drive to breed is the major reason bucks are not successful in the breeding herd. The smell of a buck is one indicator that a buck is ready to breed. This smell will get stronger closer to the normal breeding season of shorter day length (July to December) and be reduced during increasing day length (January to June). Bucks that have no buck odor during September and October will most likely not be good breeding bucks. It is recommended that you utilize some type of breeding marker to help determine if the bucks are active. This is most often done by using a breeding harness or less commonly brisket pant.

Breeding harnesses are available from several sources and in different stiles. The ones designed for sheep generally work for most goats. You may have some difficulty the first time you use a new harness design getting it to stay in place but most problems can be solved. The marker crayon is important, select a color that will show up well on your animals. There are different crayons for hot, mild, and cold temperatures. The difference is in the hardness of the crayon so you should select one appropriate for your breeding season. Hot types are for summer, through about August. Mild are generally used in fall and early winter while cold are generally used for winter breeding in Kentucky.

Preparing the Doe:
Does need to have twins to be profitable and there are steps you can take to increase the chance for multiple births. The critical factors include nutrition and health of the animal. All does should be selected for fertility by only keeping replacements from multiple births, cull does on performance, including single births, and select for good udder structure and teats placement. Young does should be about 70 pounds before the start of the breeding season (60 – 75% of expected mature body weight) to increase success. You also need to check the does for body condition and they should be in good condition on average (BCS of 2.5 to 3 on a 5 point scale is desired). Does in condition 2 to 2.5 will respond to flushing. Flushing thinner does may increase their chance to conceive but they are less likely to have multiple births.

If you plan to flush the doe herd you need to start four weeks before the breeding season and increase the quality of their diet. Energy feeds tend to have the greatest benefit however moving them to a very high quality pasture with good legumes can be as effective. The key is to have their body enter a positive energy balance in time to increase ovulation rate thus increasing the chance of multiple births. Does in good body condition are already in this positive energy balance if on good quality forage so they generally do not respond as well to flushing.

The mineral balance of the doe is also important to her fertility. Make sure the does always have access to a good quality mineral mix with Se included. Kentucky is in a Se deficient region so we must include it in our minerals to insure animals receive enough in their diets. As with the bucks, if you are unsure of the Se status of the does or have had Se deficient problems, a Se shot a couple of weeks before the start of the breeding season may help with fertility. However, keeping a good quality mineral available to the doe herd year round is the bests solution.

The doe herd should be checked for parasites, both internal and external, and treated as necessary. Selective treatment is recommended in goats to reduce the rate of resistance buildup by the parasites to the products we have available. You should also check and trim the feet of the does if needed. A foot bath to help treat any foot scald or foot rot may be helpful as well. If you don’t plan to utilize a foot bath be sure to check and treat all does that show signs of foot scald or rot.

Breeding Pasture Management:
It is important that producer utilize good pasture management during the breeding season. Nutrition levels need to be maintained for the does and bucks to continue to breed successfully. Bucks, especially young bucks, will have a tendency to not eat and loose condition rapidly during the breeding season. If the nutrition level of the pasture or feeding program is not adequate they may become infertile during the season reducing conception rates. Watch for does that are not eating properly or are loosing weight as well. Many producers mix groups at breeding so social structures are often disrupted.

It is recommended that producers utilize single buck breeding pastures. This is where a single buck is placed with a group of does. This allows better record keeping because you know who sired which kid. Bucks that are in rut, with does that are cycling do not require competition for does to breed. If you have two bucks in a pasture they will fight and may injure one another during breeding. If you use more than one buck, rotate the bucks between groups of does during the breeding season. You can move bucks every three to four weeks. This reduces the chance that a single buck will cause a total failure in one group of does. Kidding date is very effective in determining the sire in these situations. If you are a purebred breeder, you may consider pulling the bucks after 21 days and putting them back out 5 to 7 days later with a different group of does. The gap will provide a break in kidding to insure parentage for registration.

Monitor breeding activity in pastures through the use of the marking harness and you may wish to record does that were bred and ones that were bred a second time later in the season. When you change bucks change color of the marker to help determine if does are marked a second time. Some producers will change color of marker weekly to help them remember who is marked when. This will help determine when does should actually kid so you are better able to manage kidding due to better records.

Post Breeding Management:
After the breeding season it is important to maintain the nutrition level of the does for four weeks. During this time the newly formed fetus can be lost if nutritional stress becomes a problem for the doe. You should work all the animals again and check for any injuries that may have occurred during the breeding season. Mixing breeding groups back into larger herds can be stressful to all animals. This is especially a problem with bucks. Be sure to mix them slowly and allow time for them to establish their pecking order before adding new animals to the group. Bucks that have been together before will still need to re-establish this order when turned back into a common pen. Bucks often loose weight during the breeding season so feed accordingly to improve body condition and make sure they are ready for the next breeding season and winter.

Watch for signs of problems and possible abortions post breeding. If you are unsure if all does conserved, you may want to have ultrasound pregnancy testing done. This can be performed at 45 days post breeding. You can then sort and manage your does based on pregnancy status. Culling open does is a very effective practice to reducing production cost because open does will consume as much feed as pregnant does but not produce any offspring to cover those costs.

Di kalangan masyarakat kita, tanggapan bahawa daging kambing tidak baik untuk kesihatan sudah mula diterap dalam minda sejak dahulu lagi. Ekoran daripada tanggapan ini, ramai yang tidak berfikir panjang untuk menolak apa jua hidangan daging kambing. Namun persoalannya sejauh mana kebenaran tanggapan tersebut?

Ramai daripada kita tidak tahu bahawa 63% daripada daging merah yang digunakan setiap hari sebenarnya adalah daging kambing. Malah, permintaan terhadapnya adalah tinggi di merata tempat termasuklah dinegara-negara Barat, Timur Tengah, Asia, Afrika, Amerika Latin dan Caribbean.

DiMalaysia, bagaimanapun permintaan terhadap daging kambing tidaklah setinggi mana. Ia berikutan dua faktor iaitu pengguna tidak tahu di mana hendak mendapatkan daging kambing. Kebanyakkan pasaraya hanya menjual daging kambing biri-biri (mutton atau lamb).

Faktor kedua adalah tanggapan salah bahawa daging kambing mempunyai kandungan lemak tepu dan kolesterol tinggi yang membahayakan jantung. Ternyata tanggapan ini tidak benar sama sekali apabila ia berpunca daripada salah faham mengenai daging kambing biasa dan daging kambing biri-biri. Mungkin setelah mengetahui sendiri perbezaan dan frasa yang digunakan dalam melabelkan kambing dan kambing biri-biri secara tidak langsung mampu mengubah persepsi anda mengenai salah tanggapan ini.

PERBEZAAN KAMBING DAN KAMBING BIRI-BIRI
- ekornya menegak keatas.
- biasanya diternak bagi mendapatkan hasil daging dan susu.
- daging kambing biasa dikenali sebagai ‘chevon’.
- daging bagi anak kambing dikenali sebagai ‘cabrito’ atau ‘capretto’.
- dagingnya rendah lemak dan rendah kolesterol.

Kambing biri-biri (Sheep)
- ekornya jatuh kebawah.
- diternak bagi mendapatkan bulunya.
- daging bagi kambing biri-biri dewasa dikenali sebagai ‘mutton’.
- daging bagi anak kambing biri-biri dikenali sebagai ‘lamb’.
- dagingnya mengandungi kandungan lemak dan kolesterol yang tinggi.

KEISTIMEWAAN DAGING KAMBING
Tidak seperti daging kambing biri-biri, daging kambing biasa mengandungi kandungan lemak dan kolesterol yang sangat rendah. Ia sangat ideal bagi mereka yang sangat menitikberatkan soal kesihatan. Keistimewaan lain yang terdapat dalam daging kambing termasuklah:

- baik untuk jantung dan ia disyorkan oleh American Heart Association bagi mereka yang berhadapan dengan masalah kesihatan yang melibatkan jantung.
- ia kaya dengan protein dan ratio lemak sihat.
- mengandungi zat besi dan potasium yang tinggi beserta dengan tahap sodium yang rendah.
- kandungan kalori dan kolesterolnya lebih rendah berbanding daging lembu dan ayam.
- tiada pencemaran hormon seperti daging ayam dan pencemaran bakteria sepertimana yang ada pada ikan.
